Things to Do Before Buying a Used Car

Buying a used car is a great way to save thousands of dollars versus the cost of getting a brand-new vehicle. Thanks to the increased reliability of vehicles across the board, it is not as big of a risk as it used to be. However, there are still a few things you need to do before you sign that paperwork.

1.     Know what you need from a car. While you might dream of thrilling performance and sleek designs, you probably need something more practical. Write down your list of must-haves in a car, like seating for five, plenty of cargo space, modern connectivity, etc. Make sure the vehicles you consider stick to that list.

2.     Set a budget. Make sure you know how much of a car you can afford. If you do not currently have a car payment, look at your monthly finances to determine how much you can spend on a car each month. Don't forget about fuel, insurance, and service costs.

3.     Do your research. Do not buy the first you can find that meets your requirements. Do lots of research to compare specific makes, models, and years to make sure you are getting the best fit for your needs and budget.

4.     Know the car's history. Used cars come with a history. Make sure you know what that is before you buy it. Check through its vehicle history report from places like CarFax so you can see how many owners it has had, if it has been in any accidents, or if there are any problems with the title.

5.     Take a test drive. Once you have narrowed down your search to a few leading contenders, take them out for a test drive. Along with driving in a variety of situations and speeds, test out as much of the technology as you can. Park the car somewhere quiet, leave the engine running, and listen for any strange sounds.
